Since 1993, International Karstological Schools have been organised, covering many aspects of karst research. The basic idea of the School has been to present the state of the art in selected topics and promote discussion between participants via set of lectures, poster sessions and related field trips to the area of Slovene Classical karst.
Research in the last two decades has contributed new findings in many topics of these past schools. Therefore, the 20th IKS is an opportunity to review our current understanding of typical karst forms and processes, stress the research advances in the last two decades and define challenges and perspectives for the next generation.
The work will include
o Invited keynote lectures covering wide range of topic
o selected lectures by other participants
o poster presentations
o fieldwork
The topics will cover
o processes and forms on karst surface and caves in different setting
o role of dissolution, sediment tranport, tectonics, climate and life in karst morphogenesis
o regional karst development
o man’s impact on karst
Who should be interesting in participating:
Senior and junior karst researchers, students, managers of karst resources and other people interested in karst phenomena.

				27-7-2012 | International Training Camp for Young Speleologists on the Swabian Alb, Germany
			</title>
			<link>http://www.speleo.nl/vereniging/agenda.asp?id=655</link>
			<description>
International Training Camp for Young Speleologists
on the Swabian Alb, Germany

From July 27th, 2012 to August 11th, 2012
Tent camp at the caving club building in Blaubeuren – Seissen, Germany
Recommended age for participants: 16 years and older

Caves are geotopes and biotopes therefore sensitive climate archives which are worth to explore.
Research and protection of this climate archives and the actual cave climate, which is an indicator of climate changes, is an actual and important European concern.
Speleologists can support the exploration and protection of these climate archives by international cooperation.
A good training is the best base for research and caving activities.
Therefore we offer different training courses and a wide supporting program covering all important caving themes. Due to small groups the training will be very effective. An additional intention of the camp is to meet other young cavers. You can establish ties, talk about your and their interests, hobbies and culture and perhaps meet them in their home area and visit karst areas and caves for future joint research.

The camp is intended for young people who want to start with caving or who already have some experience and want to extend their skills.
You should understand German or English language.

				2-9-2012 | 21st International Conference of Subterranean Biology, Kosice, Slovakia
			</title>
			<link>http://www.speleo.nl/vereniging/agenda.asp?id=658</link>
			<description>
The biennial International Conference on Subterranean Biology (ICSB) is the premier forum for the presentation and discusion of advances in theoretical and applied subteranean biology.
Subteranean biology, also reffered to as biospeleology or speleobiology, is an integrative field of biology dealing with all aspects of life in subteranean environments like caves, subteranean fissure systems or groundwater.
International conferences used to be called symposia on subteranean biology are an initiative of the International Society for Subterranean Biology, organized by appointed national members.

In present, over 6000 caves and abysses are registered in Slovakia. The longest is Demänovská Cave system in the Low Tatras with total lenght over 35 km, involving well known show cave, Demänovská Cave of Liberty. The deepest is Hipmanová Cave system, with total depth -495 m. Famous Dobšinská Ice Cave, contains the largest amount of cave ice in the world, deposited in one cave.
Ochtinská Aragonite Cave represent an unique natural phenomenon drawing attention by the richness and variety of aragonite fillings, as well as by interesting evolution and development of cave spaces.
An important karstic region, Slovak-Aggtelek Karst, is located in close surroundings of Košice. In 1977 troglobiotic pseudoscorpion Neobisium slovacum was discovered by professor J. Guli&amp;#269;ka in the Stará Brzotínska Cave, endemic species of the karstic region (we have used it for our logo). Domica Cave, part of the Domica-Baradla Cave system, is famous by archeological discoveries.

				28-9-2012 | Euro Speleoforum 2012: Speleo Diversity, Muotathal, Switzerland
			</title>
			<link>http://www.speleo.nl/vereniging/agenda.asp?id=595</link>
			<description>
Dear Speleo Friends,

We are happy to kindly invite you to participate to the great European speleological 2012 gathering that will be the 13th Swiss National Congress of Speleology - EuroSpeleo Forum 2012, from September 29 till October 1st, 2012, in Muotathal - Switzerland, in a karstic massif at 60km south of Zurich beside Hölloch cave, greatest Swiss cave. There, will also be held the 2nd edition of the EuroSpeleo Protection Symposium, which first edition was at Vercors 2008.

This congress follows the motto “Speleodiversity” because there is neither “a speleology” nor &quot;a caver” but a diversity of specialised areas and interests within caving and cave research. We’ll represent all fields of speleology and it will be a platform for mutual exchange between cavers from all over Europe and beyond.

Interesting sessions about scientific and exploration speleology in Switzerland and all over Europe, caving techniques and IT technology in caving, a 3D-Photoshow and, of course, great caving trips and much more than you may expect. You surely shouldn't miss that !

The 2nd circular of the event is available in English: http://www.speleodiversity.ch/images/NHK_2012_2._Zirkular_en.pdf

Please register asap at www.speleodiversity.ch and take advantage of the early-booker fee until January 31st 2012.
On the website you'll find all the usefull information you need to prepare your participation to the 7th EuroSpeleo Forum &quot;SpeleoDiversity 2012&quot;.

See you in Muotathal - Switzerland !

				29-9-2012 | 2nd EuroSpeleo Protection Symposium, Muotathal, Switzerland
			</title>
			<link>http://www.speleo.nl/vereniging/agenda.asp?id=682</link>
			<description>
On behalf of the Organizing Committee we kindly invite all speleologists and scientists
related to cave and karst protection, to participate at the 2nd EuroSpeleo Protection
Symposium organized jointly by the Swiss Speleological Society and the European Cave
Protection Commission/European Speleological Federation and supported by the
Commission for Scientific Speleology (SSS and SCNAT).

Aims of the symposium
The aims of this symposium are to provide a platform for scientists and speleologists,
active in the area of cave and karst protection, to share the state of the art and overview
of their current work, to exchange views from both perspectives on best practices’
progress and applications in Europe. The outcomes of the symposia will be the first
steps in developing a framework document on cave and karst protection in Europe in the
context of regulations approaching already this topic i.e. IUCN Guidelines for Cave and
Karst Protection, the Habitats Directive (Council Directive 92/43/EEC of 21 May 1992 on
the Conservation of natural habitats and of wild fauna and flora) and the
Recommendation on conservation of the geological heritage and areas of special
geological interest (Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, 2004) and other
existing conventions at European and Global level. The role of the document will be to
highlight the significant role of caves and karst as archives of natural (biological,
geological, geomorphological, mineralogical, paleontological, hydrological,
environmental, etc.), historical and cultural (archaeological, anthropological) values.
Furthermore, it will be an efficient tool for sustaining European caves, maybe also in the
construction of a European Directive or European Recommendations and Regulations
concerning caves’ protection.

				7-10-2012 | Ghost-rock karst symposium, Han-sur-Lesse, Belgium
			</title>
			<link>http://www.speleo.nl/vereniging/agenda.asp?id=680</link>
			<description>
In the paleokarsts from Hainaut (Belgium), you can find weathering features similar to soil features: an “in situ” limestone weathering with residual weathered-rock (“ghost-rock”) keeping its initial volume. Geological features like cherts beds, stratifications, joints filled with calcite veins remain although they present higher porosity. The weathering follows the joints and moves laterally by weathering fronts which can isolate intact blocks. We have given the name of “ghost-rock” to those features.
Problems which are faced by the karstologists are various: nature of the weathering, influence of lithological and petrophysical characteristics of the residual weathered rock, relations with the tectonic evolution of the region, geometry of the shapes, transition from the ghost-rock to the speleological cave, detection of the ghost-rocks in relation with karstic hazard, ghost-rocks and mineralizations, a.s.o.
